Jason Fung explains how therapeutic fasting addresses the two-compartment problem of energy storage to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school and internal medicine at the University of Toronto before finishing his nephrology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai hospital. He now has a practice in Ontario, Canada where he uses his Intensive Dietary Management program to help all sorts of patients, but especially those suffering from the two big epidemics of modern times: obesity and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Fung uses innovative solutions to these problems, realising that conventional treatments are not that effective in helping people.

Dr. Jason Fung, a Canadian Nephrologist is an encyclopedic resource for the impacts of calorie restriction and fasting. While he has a couple (really good) books, the following presentation is a nice overview of his work, findings and results of therapeutic fasting: 'Therapeutic Fasting - Solving the Two-Compartment Problem' link to this video

On “Complete and Voluntary Starvation of 50 days”

I am aware that extreme fasting is dangerous, but so is extreme water drinking.0 But fasting in general seems to be stigmatised. Dr. Jason Fung 1 has some fascinating videos on Youtube about why fasting isn't bad. I am just curious why there's a mainstream view that it's bad and the exception is that it's good, vs the other way around? 0 link 1 link link to this video Edit: Dr. Fung points out one common misconception that fasting causes muscle to be eroded.

…eak down your body, lose muscle, produce ammonia, urea, and all sorts of toxins, pull out stored toxins and use them because your body is so desperate on its low reserves of vital nutrients..and destroy your organs. Bravo! According to this video _none_ of that happens. He addresses all of those claims. On “Intermittent fasting works – not only for weight loss but also for heart health”

An accelerated version of intermittent fasting is longer term fasting - ideal minimum being 3 days, although even only being able to handle 24 hours at first is a great start; the next ideal number of days is 5 days, then 10 days, then 20 days based on different changes that occur at those periods. I always recommend people watch this by Dr. Jason Fung: 'Therapeutic Fasting - Solving the Two-Compartment Problem' - link to this video

On “Ask HN: How to break anxiety/fear-avoidance cycle?”

Have you ever tried water fasting? The reason I ask/suggest is that when water fasting (which isn't starvation mode, starvation mode happens when you're regularly enough eating calories keeping your digestive system going - but not enough to actually provide your body with what it needs) is that when fasting your body 1) burns more calories so you'll have more energy available (to your body and brain) than if eating food, and 2) your body produces more adrenaline - so you have more mental energy too. I wonder if this relatively simple/quick "hack" could give you an experience that may help you have the mental energy, and get rid of brain fog that some foods you eat may also be causing you, t…

I'll share what I know and ask what I can. My longest fast was 10 days. The first time I fasted what I discovered was it was my mind telling me I was hungry, not my body. There's a pizza chain where I live called Pizza Pizza, bright orange background with white lettering. It was a 3 day fast and on the second day as I was walking that big bright sign around dinner popped up into my head, and I was like "Oh, I'll have pizza tonight for dinner." And then I realized I wasn't hungry. It taught me that we develop mental triggers, reminders, for when to eat - and that's pretty much why advertising works to manipulate us, and it does it very well; many if not most people are driven by their ego min…

Re: 'People talk about these "wondrous" effects of fasting. All I got was headaches, tiredness, feeling sick and constantly thinking about food.' It sounds like you went into it without understanding the processes that will be unfolding - you didn't do enough research, otherwise you'd understand the symptoms you described. The first time you fast will always be the roughest - most challenging too, especially since you've likely been eating highly inflammatory foods your whole life, likely without any break - and so by removing those foods and that inflammation from your body and brain, your brain is going to start functioning differently - and better. Your brain 1) has to prune the pathways…
