An artist shares her personal experience of living with aphantasia, the inability to visualize mental images, and how she adapts.

So...yeah. I'm an artist that can't see pictures in my head... Weird, huh? I'd never heard of it until now, and I'm sure many of you wouldn't have either. So can you visualise well? I want to hear all about it! Ask your friends, family and coworkers! I want to find out how many people may also have Aphantasia. I've recently created an Aphantasia themed tee on my merch store, check it out! amyrightmeow.teemill.com/product/aphantasia-aesthetic/ Even if you don't suffer from Aphantasia, you can always improve your visualization! Check out this article! photographyinsider.info/image-streaming-for-photographers/ Another fascinating read on how Aphantasia doesn't hold you back, it's just an unusual way of solving problems! 1967ers.wordpress.com/2018/08/08/aphantasia-you-have-an-extr… An account very similar to mine here: youtu.be/x3kWafrsUBM Sustainable, renewable and ethical MERCH, available now! amyrightmeow.teemill.com/ Join the community, right MEOW! What people say. Highly recommended by users with aphantasia as a fantastic description of what the condition feels like from an artist's perspective.

On “The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia”

So I have aphantasia, and I first realized when talking to someone about mental images and memories. They have photorealistic pictures in their mind, or even video scenes like a movie. At my best I have something like an expressionist painting with words and concepts arranged spatially on blobs of color representing the object. More typically, just blackness. Here is another description of it, and a test in the first part: link to this video

On “Aphantasia”

A little slow, but this video is fantastic for describing the feeling of aphantasia and it's sort of doubly fascinating that the incredibly talented artist who made it suffers from it (as I'm the flip side, great at visualizing and horrid at creation) link to this video

On “My Brain Doesn’t Picture Things”

It's hard! There are some professional artists who are aphantasic, e.g. this YouTube video talks about it link to this video IIRC, the artist does lots of sketches, and looks at them to see what looks right. And also uses computer models to get angles of what she's drawing which she struggles with otherwise.
