Aging and longevityNutritionFastingLongevity interventionsHealthspan and aging well

Valter Longo discusses the science of fasting-mimicking diets and their effects on longevity, cellular regeneration, and disease treatment.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick speaks with Dr. Valter Longo, a professor of gerontology and biological sciences and director of the longevity institute at the University of Southern California. Dr. Longo has made huge contributions to the field of aging, including the role of fasting and diet in longevity and healthspan in humans as well as metabolic fasting therapies for the treatment of human diseases. What people say. Highly recommended for its detailed explanation of the biological mechanisms and clinical trials of fasting.

On “The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation”

Wow! I awoke early this morning from a bit of a bender last night and have a similar feeling of mania (the positive, productive kind). At first I attributed it to a GABA rebound, but thinking back, a sleep fast has historically injected a sense of urgency and vigour. I have been fasting intermittently after reading Valter Longo's metabolic oxidation research (the term they used for aging research to get it published). I skip breakfast and try to leave 16-18 hours between meals. Have been losing weight but keeping muscle tone almost effortlessly. My skin has also improved. No negative effect so far. Good interview about I.F.: link to this video

On “Exercise, fasting shown to help cells shed defective proteins”

There's health benefits and potential longevity benefits. I would hardly call fasting a fad. It has been around through the ages. Here's some legitimate information on a fast. link to this video We know enough about some of the mechanisms involved and how it can promote healing the body by offering it a "reset" so-to-speak via autophagy.

On “Jason Fung explains why intermittent fasting diets work”

Dr. Valter Longo says you need only 5 days of fasting. link Also, it seems to regenerate β cells for Type 1 diabetes humans, although I would imagine the "regular" fasting would do that, too since it's a more extreme version of the FMD: link Some interviews with him on it (there are more on youtube): link to this video link link

On “History of Biosphere 2”

…CR are achievable by using discrete periods of fasting as opposed to long-term restriction, which has obvious challenges of practicality and undesirable effects like emaciation just to name a few. He talks about Dr. Walford's time in biosphere 2 and how it impacted both Walford's work and, ultimately, his own. Starts around here around 00:01:45... link to this video…
