Gary Taubes argues against the calories-in, calories-out model of obesity, focusing instead on insulin and carbohydrate consumption.

Gary Taubes spoke to Googlers in Mountain View on May 2, 2011 about his book Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It. About the book: An eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes. Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes revisits the urgent question of what's making us fat and how we can change in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubess crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience. Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the calories-in, calories-out model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulins regulation of our fat tissue. He also answers the most persistent questions: Why are some people thin and others fat? What roles do exercise and genetics play in our weight? What foods should we eat, and what foods should we avoid? Packed with essential information and concluding with an easy-to-follow diet, Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it. About the Author: Gary Taubes is a contributing correspondent for Science magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, and Esquire. His work has been included in The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010), and has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, the only print journalist so recognized. He is currently a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator in Health Policy Research at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.

What people say. Recommended as a compelling argument for the carbohydrate-insulin model of obesity and ketogenic diets.

On “The Fat Trap: Our Bodies Are Fighting Against Us”

The linked pdf makes a number of factual errors. it incorrectly suggests that ketogenic don't encourage eating lots of vegetables and low-sugar fruits. It also trys to twist "not all calories are the same" into "you can eat as much as you want". and of course, trans fats should always be avoided. but you should really decide for yourself: link to this video link

On “Learning to Eat Well and Stay Healthy”

Actually you are most likely wrong. There is really good evidence that the number of calories don't matter and that the type of calories are everything. People associate the number of calories as mattering because they change other things at the same time. Please watch videos from Gary Taubes who wrote "Good Calories Bad Calories" and "Why we get fat". Here's his google talk: link to this video On a personal note, I lost 40 lbs and I eat far more calories now than I did before. Open you mind for a bit and really watch that video, you might be convinced that what you think about calories are all wrong. I certainly changed what I thought was true as fact.

On “Learning to Eat Well and Stay Healthy”

Please explain how countless cultures who are severely malnutritioned and live off of less than 600 calories a day are obese? There are no credible studies that are currently being done that can answer those questions with calories in / calories out. Because it is simply wrong. Taubes google talk link to this video

On “What Does 200 Calories Look Like?”

msluyter correctly points to the Inuits as a good case against what you've said. Their diet consists pretty much entirely fat and meat yet they have lower heart disease and rates of cancer. link Pretty strange how their not keeling over from heart disease! Perhaps the traditional view of fat is wrong. Highly recommend you watch this amazing lecture by Garry Taubes at Google: link to this video He also brings a lot of other eye opening case studies to light such as obesity in Pima Indians during a famine.

On “How I have lost over 100 pounds and don’t know how”

…h better than what "they" have been telling us that the idea that this is a "fad" starts to sound a bit silly. Actually, some proponents of ketogenic diets are backing their claims with explanatory models, instead of simple epidemiological studies (which are, in my opinion, the lowest form of Science). Check out this talk if you want to know more: link to this video edit: this talk provides some convincing arguments against your assumption #1.…

Another user already posted this link. Here's tons of evidence and someone wondering why we've ignored that evidence for so long. link to this video

On “Sweden becomes the first country to reject low-fat diet dogma”

…ou're walking around with a permanent immune response, which is not a good thing," says Cooper. "It causes problems all over the place." More as well! It turns out that calories is an oversimplified model of dieting. Here's a recent interesting study that paints it clearly: link But there's more! Garry Taubes explains a lot of reasons very well: link to this video There are so many reasons carbs are bad for you, not just from a satiation point of view but also from long term health points of view. I'm confident this post has actually done a disservice to the question why should we eat less carbs, but hopefully it's something you might find interesting and read more about and maybe change your opinion…
