Hank Green explains the molecular structure of water, hydrogen bonding, cohesion, adhesion, and why water is essential for life.

Hank teaches us why water is one of the most fascinating and important substances in the universe. Review: Re-watch = Introduction = Molecular structure & hydrogen bonds = Cohesion & surface tension = Adhesion = Hydrophilic substances = Hydrophobic substances = Henry Cavendish = Ice Density = Heat Capacity = Citations: extension.umn.edu/distribution/youthdevelopment/components/0… uni.edu/~iowawet/H2OProperties.html hometrainingtools.com/properties-water-science-teaching-tip/… science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/geophysics/h2o… robinsonlibrary.com/science/chemistry/biography/cavendish.ht… chemistry.mtu.edu/~pcharles/SCIHISTORY/HenryCavendish.html nndb.com/people/030/000083778/ notablebiographies.com/Ca-Ch/Cavendish-Henry.html Crash Course is on Patreon! What people say. Recommended to explain water polarity and its interaction with other polar molecules like cellulose.

On “Is the xylem like a tissue paper?”

I'm in year 5 too; and (with a bit of help of my dad) I have some bits of answers (my challenge of the day). A paper tissue is principally made of cellulose. And cellulose is a polar molecule. And so is water. So, the paper will easily absorb water. See these short clips 1 for water polarity and here for cellulose 2. In plants, xylem vessels are also made of cellulose and that helps the small molecules of water to stick to the vessels walls. Think of it as a lot of tiny drinking straws made of wood. There are at least two reasons why water manages to 'climb up' from the roots to the leaves through the xylem. During the day, when the sunlight is available, water will be cons…
