He’s well known for studying and treating addiction. I’ve wanted to invite Dr. Maté to this podcast for a while because he is not only an expert in the pathologies of addiction, but he’s experimented with — and used successfully — tools that are perhaps outside the realm of traditional psychiatry. He is also a co-founder, along with Vicky Dulai, of Compassion for Addiction, a group that advocates for a new way to understand and treat addiction. On “Ask HN: Effective methods to fight depression?”

I've recently watched Tim Ferris's pod-cast with Dr. Gabor Mate who is well known for his work with people who suffer from ADHD (including himself), Depression and various types of addiction: link to this video . It's rather a long interview (2h 23') that touches on many topics (Depression, ADHD, Ayahuasca), but IMO well worth time invested. Very insightful as to the ways one might take when it comes to improving his/her own wellbeing. I had a rather milder form of depression few years ago (with symptoms such as low-self esteem, loss of motivation to work, eat, exercise and pretty much all standard symptoms except suicidal thoughts). One thing that helped a lot to break negative thought patters and to…

On “Portugal’s radical drugs policy is working (2017)”

An excellent way to push against addiction is to address the reasons for addiction. As Dr. Gabor Mate, who has spent a decade working with addiction and written extensively about it says: don’t ask why the addiction, ask why the pain. Alcohol and other drugs are the means of addiction and in no way the cause of it. I recommend Tim Ferris’ interview with Gabor Mate for a great honest look into the causes and mechanisms of addiction. link to this video

On “Ask HN: Things you wish you knew before having kids?”

…your baby, soothing music w/o words like works from Claude Debussy, smile/laugh at every chance. 2. <9mons while baby on their back, move their legs like army crawling, lotsa of stomach time. 3. >10mons 2 individuals who seem to contradict, but same messages: (just a few quick potent sound bites) - Jordan Peterson : link - *Gabor Mate\ : link link to this video 4. Your child will mimic your every move, talk, and reactions. They basically are your mini me. When they say, the are reflections of you they aren't kidding. The few times I talked aspirated or over excited happy or angry, I witnessed my child re-enacting it later including the few words he remembers. Kinda scary. So point #4: you need to…

On “Ask HN: What are some of the best non-technical talks of all time?”

"of all time" is often too strong of a qualifier for me. I would say "talks that I want to rewatch the moment they come to mind." Charlie Kaufman's Bafta Lecture link Gabor Mate, Prisoners of Childhood link to this video I consider Bret Victor's inventing on principle a non-technical talk, so yeah that. link Quel Solaar, on creativity link

On “Early-life stress can disrupt maturation of brain’s reward circuits”

I highly recommend Hungry Ghosts for anyone that wants to understand addiction (it’s an escape from pain that probably started in childhood ). You could also go straight to The Myth of Normal which has some of this information from his other works. The Joe Rogan interview was one of Rogans worst jobs interviewing- there’s a lot more depth that Mate has to give and some of it comes out in other interviews he has given. There’s a few on YouTube link to this video

Gabor Maté 0 also discusses this topic often, particularly related to children. You can find quite a few interesting interviews with him online, for example with Joe Rogan 1 or Tim Feriss 2. --- 0: link 1: link 2: link to this video
