Michael Greger discusses how a whole-food, plant-based diet can prevent and reverse the leading causes of premature death.

Dr. Greger visited Google NYC to discuss his new book - How Not to Die. The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-recognized lecturer, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of death in America—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s, high blood pressure, and more—and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The 15 leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn’t have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger’s advice, all of it backed up by peer-reviewed scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer. History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug—and without the side effects. What about liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (our #1 killer)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to help prevent the disease, but arrest and even reverse it. In addition to showing what to eat to help prevent the top 15 causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen—a checklist of the foods we should try to consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor’s orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives. Moderated by Anthony V.

On “Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?”

Not suggesting this is an end all solution, since CHF can also stem from non diet related issues, but eating a whole food plant based diet can start to reverse heart disease in as little as a few weeks. It can also prevent and reverse many other diet caused/related diseases. I think part of the issue has mainly been a lack of education on what a poor diet consists of. If anyone is interested, Dr. Gregor is a great resource of knowledge on this subject. He did a talk at google link to this video which is based on his book "How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease" link His website is link All not for profit.

On “Relax, You Don’t Need to ‘Eat Clean’”

I like this "scientific evidence based nutritionist" by the name of Michael Greger. He pushes out a lot of content, going through the paper to draw actionable conclusions. Here's what he has to say about some of the topics of the article: Salt (6 videos) — link Bacon (now a class I carcinogen, like smoking and asbestos): link MSG (no scientific evidence it hurts): link GMOs: link The Monsanto Round-up pesticide often found on "Round-up Ready" (TM) GMOs: link The article also mentioned people ove-rdiagnozing gluten intolerance. So what?! And is says: > We demonized fats. Then cholesterol. Then meat. Yes, well some of us did, because when I look around I see still loads of fat and hi…

On “Rise in cancers 'caused by weight'”

…entirely, you'll need a vitamin B12 supplement, unless you get your water from natural streams and eat vegetables without washing off the dirt :) (B12 comes from bacteria -- that's where grazing animals get it from). If you're interested in the science, here's a long (but good) talk by Dr. Michael Greger (creator of nutritionfacts.org) at google: link to this video Note that he's different from most of the diet advocates out there in that he seems to try quite hard to remain focused on the science, his website is entirely free, he's not selling supplements, and all the proceeds of his books go to charity. I'm a big fan :)…

On “Older Americans Are ‘Hooked’ on Vitamins”

Actually, it's more likely that the issue is we're not eating a mostly whole foods, plant-based diet. It's not carbs that are the problem, but refined carbs certainly are a problem. They're not what our bodies evolved to thrive on. I highly recommend watching Dr. Greger's talk at Google0 on the subject, or reading his book1. 0 link to this video 1 link

Yeesh. That's a great visual. I'm a sedentary software engineer... gotta make some changes. It reminds me of the cancer slides in the "How Not to Die" talk link to this video which is partly why I'm now vegan.

On “World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate”

You’re right that the American diet has gone way too far to meat, and eating a more Mediterranean or South-East Asian diet would be a big health improvement. NutritionFacts.org is a non profit run by Dr. Michael Gregor, who runs a YouTube channel full of health advice. He looks at the latest scientific data and shares it on his channel. Based on his interpretation of the best available data a fully vegan diet seems to have a lot of health benefits. I became vegan for moral reasons so I haven’t researched what a more mixed diet would be like, but I’m glad my choice is a healthy one. Here’s one of his full talks: link to this video And here’s his channel: link
